Eighteen-year-old Connor Barba of Norman was driving with his mom, 41-year-old Megan Barnett, to the game last Saturday when a Camaro struck them head-on. Forty-five-year-old Joseph Savage of Mortuary veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into them around 4 p.m. It’s not known why he crossed into their lane.
Reportedly, Megan and Connor were on their way to the Kansas City Chiefs game after Megan surprised Connor with tickets for his birthday. His uncle mentioned that Connor was shocked and hadn’t expected the surprise, as getting tickets wasn’t even on his radar.
Megan is currently in the ICU in Tulsa and will require extensive recovery. She is reportedly in stable condition. Both Connor and Joseph were pronounced deceased at the scene. There was also a third driver involved in the crash who was unharmed.
It was stated that Connor swerved to avoid Joseph’s car and slammed on the brakes, which caused his side to take the brunt of the impact. His uncle mentioned that Connor’s quick thinking is likely the reason his mother Megan is still alive.
The two were really looking forward to the game, according to his uncle. Connor wanted to see Baker Mayfield play, while Megan was excited to see the Chiefs, likely due to the Taylor Swift connection.
Connor was described as an outstanding young man full of joy, with a wonderful smile. For his age, he was exceptionally mature and respectful to everyone he met.
His father wrote on Facebook that Connor had “the biggest heart of anyone” he’s ever known. A GoFundMe has been set up for Connor and his mother Megan if you’re interested in donating.
