Nyyon Sanders allegedly killed another man just hours after his ankle monitor died, according to Mobile County jail records. He has been charged again with murder and robbery. Sanders was out on bond after being charged in connection with a 2022 homicide, which occurred when he was a juvenile.
Authorities said Sanders waited for his ankle monitor to lose power before heading to an apartment complex. The monitor reportedly stopped working around 5 PM, and within four hours, Sanders allegedly killed 25-year-old Joseph Evans Jr. and injured another person at the apartment complex.
Sanders had been released on a $200,000 bail for the 2022 homicide. The trial for that case is scheduled for January 2025.
District Attorney Keith Blackwood described the situation as a “worst-case scenario” that the community dreads. He criticized the private company responsible for monitoring suspects with ankle bracelets, noting they previously failed to report another murder suspect violating release conditions by visiting a Mississippi casino.
Blackwood emphasized the need for funding to allow the sheriff’s office to take over the ankle monitoring system.
